BP5_2010012_Web2.0Tools2(Voice Thread)

The web 2.0 tool I’ve chosen for this week is called “Tikatok- Every Child Has A Story.” This is a wonderful site were children can make, print, and order their own book! No, really! This would be an excellent idea for any grade level including teachers. Over the short course of my teaching career (3 years) I must have written about 30 books already. I can see myself making books for centers, picture books, math books, etc. The possibilities are endless. This would make reading and writing fun!

The pricing is fairly good, nothing over $20. You can order the books in hardcover or softcover. They even have a PDF version for about $3. Shipping costs can be anywhere from $7 - $17 depending on the shipping method. It might be a little difficult for each student to have his or her own book, but this could be a class project. It would be fun to see class books over the years.

Parents can use this website at home as well. It is very easy to use. No complicated instructions or downloads. I was shocked at how easy this was.

There are extra resources available to teachers such as story starters to help students. Lesson plan helps are available along with ways to track student progress.

This site is owned and maintained by Barnes and Noble. For teachers, a free membership is required to reap the full benefits that are offered.

You or your students own the copyright of all original stories and images submitted to Tikatok with the exception of books created using Build-A-Bear StorySparks. Build-A-Bear owns the copyright of all books created using Build-A-Bear StorySparks.

Enjoy!

  1. Great find Marcia. I am very surprised by how little it costs to actually create a book. Like you said it would be difficult to actually get everyone in the class a book, it would be a great way to create a class book with everyone's work in it though. I think the pride the students would get from something like this would go a long way to motivating them to do some great work if it were to be in a book. I also like your idea about using this service yourself to create your own books, you've already written 30, wow, guess I know why I teach math now. I went to the website trying to find an actual sample to look at but could not find one, my only concern would be the scans for the pictures, at 200 dpi, quality might be affected. Another great idea, personally I think we should keep up these blogs for the rest of our time here at Full Sail, there is no way I could find all of these great ideas on my own.
